A Typical Day in Our Classroom

Students begin to arrive at 8:30am. As they enter the classroom they put any backpacks, jackets, or show and tell items in their cubbie. Then it's off to work they go. By this time in the year the students have had many lessons on the materials and are able to choose whatever work they would like to do as long as they have had a lesson on it. We have worktime until about 11:00am, during this time I am able to give new lessons to the children as well as re-present lessons as needed. Most lessons are given on an individual basis however, there are some group lessons as well. By having this un-interrupted work cycle, the students are able to build their concentration as they work on materials of their choosing for as long as they wish (as long as they are making appropriate choices, concentrating, and keeping busy, otherwise I then get to redirect them to a more appropriate work:)

At about 9:30 I set up snack at a table for 2 and the child that brought snack is able to choose a friend to have snack with them, while the rest of the class continues to work. As each child finishes snack they leave the table clean for another student to have snack. The children may choose to have snack when they see that a chair at the snack table is available. Snack is left out until every child has had a chance to eat snack, usually thats about 10:30.

About 11:00 I play the song Cannon in D on the ipod, this is the clue that it's time to finish the work you are doing, put it away, and join us in the group area.

Group time consists of our "Good Morning" song, Calendar, Pledge of Allegiance, songs, story, group lesson, or game to reinforce the theme of the month or lessons being taught.

We begin to gather our things and get ready to go home about 11:25am.
